Dr. Lazaro J. Perez

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University.

I earned my PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2019 from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain), graduating with summa cum laude honors. Before joining Oregon State University, I worked as Assistant Research Professor at the Desert Research Institute (Reno, NV), where I initially served as a postdoctoral associate from 2019 to 2021.

I’m originally from Bayamo, Cuba. I like running and swimming, and prefer tea over coffee. More recently, I enjoy reading Jack Ryan novels.

Postdoctoral Researchers

  • Nathan Bernard

    I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the SBLab, where I study multiphase flow and reactive transport in porous media. My research combines microfluidic experiments and CFD simulations to understand how pore-scale flow dynamics control mixing, solute transport, and reactive processes.

    I come from France. I like swimming, rock climbing, and cycling, but above all, I love a good wine with some quality cheese.

Graduate Students

  • Laura Jimenez

    I am a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. My PhD focuses on Water Resources Engineering, and in the SBlab, my project is on studying the hydrologic controls that impact solute transport, fluid mixing, and chemical reactions in partially saturated porous media.

    I was born and raised in Colombia. During my free time, I enjoy exploring new places, a good conversation with family or friends and doing self-care routines.

  • Janeth Gonzalez

    I am a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. My research in the SBLab explores enhanced mixing and reaction dynamics induced by microbial processes in subsurface porous media.

    I grew up in Mexico, where I developed a strong connection to water and nature. In my free time, I enjoy outdoors activities and natural spaces.

  • Reza Fahmi

    I am a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Oregon State, specializing in Water Resources Engineering. In the SBLab, my research focuses on how microplastics interact with bacterial pathogens and how these interactions influence pathogen transport and spreading in subsurface environments under different pore structures and flow conditions.

    I grew up in Indonesia, a country known for its warm climate and beautiful archipelago sceneries. I enjoy badminton, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.

  • Finley Taylor

    I am a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. My research in the SBLab uses integrated hydrologic-geochemical numerical simulations to evaluate stormwater infiltration potential and contaminant treatment performance in natural roadside environments.

    I came to OSU from Ashland, OR, where I enjoyed spending lots of time on the local trails. In my free time, I enjoy going for runs and play disc golf at any of the local courses. 

  • Eve Goldberg

    I am a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. My research in the SBLab focuses on evaluating coastal groundwater flooding associated with sea-level rise and seawater intrusion.  

    I'm from Raleigh, North Carolina, where I spent many summers at the beach. In my free time, I enjoy drawing, baking, and trying out any new sport I can.

  • Maggie Robinett

    I am a Masters student in Water Resources Engineering at Oregon State University. In the SBLab, I study the transport and fate of PFOA contaminants in saturated and unsaturated porous media using microfluidics.

    I’m from Seattle, Washington, and enjoy going back to the city to spend time with family. In my free time I like to read, swim, and dote over my cat.

Undergraduate Students

  • Eliza Hauer

    I am a second-year Civil Engineering student at Oregon State University. In the SBLab, I analyze numerical simulations of multiphase flow and reactive transport in fractured porous media. 

    I was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona. I moved to Oregon to experience the gorgeous, but wildly different, climate. In my free time, I enjoy weightlifting, reading, hiking, and watching the newest Marvel movies.
